Elemental: Animated love story about the fire element Ember and the water element Wade, who despite all their differences find each other and learn to overcome prejudices.

Plot and background

In Element City, anthropomorphic natural elements live together in harmony as fire, water, land and air dwellers. However, the tough and quick-witted fire element Ember Lumen (voice in the original: Leah Lewis) has never left her Fire Town district and only hangs out with her own kind on the advice of her narrow-minded family. When a plumbing accident lands water element Wade Ripple (Mamoudou Athie) in Ember’s father Bernie’s (Ronnie Del Carmen) shop, which she is soon to take over, the young fire element’s life changes abruptly. Although Ember and Wade cannot touch each other due to their elemental nature, over time they both discover how much they actually have in common and Ember begins to question her beliefs and worldview.

The official trailer promises a true big screen spectacle of the four elements:

“Elemental” – background, cast, theatrical release

Directed by Peter Sohn (“Arlo & Spot”), “Elemental” is an animated romantic adventure for young and old. Element City and its various districts are inspired by Sohn’s youth growing up as a child of immigrants in 1970s New York City and other major cities around the globe, which accounts for the city’s distinct cultural and ethnic diversity.

Elemental took seven years to produce, both in the studio and at the filmmakers’ homes. Thomas Newman, who has worked on previous Pixar animated films such as Finding Dory, composed the music for the film. The original English-language version of the film features the voices of Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Catherine O’Hara, Mason Wertheimer, Joe Pera and Matt Yang King.

The romantic comedy about fire element Ember and water element Wade opens in cinemas here on 22 June 2023.
