Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken: Animated action comedy about a shy teenage girl who discovers she belongs to a legendary royal race of mythical sea octopuses.
Plot and background
Introvert, awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman (voiced by Lana Condor) tries desperately to fit in at Oceanside High, but mostly she just feels invisible. She tutors her skater crush (voiced by Jaboukie Young-White) in maths, but he cares little for her and only for her fractal patterning. Since her overprotective supermom (voiced by Toni Collette) has forbidden Ruby from ever going in the water, she can’t even hang out at the beach with her cool classmates.
When the teenager finally breaks her mother’s rule number one, she discovers that as a direct descendant of the warrior octopus queens, she is destined to inherit the throne from her grandmother (voiced by Jane Fonda), the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas. Most importantly, she must defend the world’s oceans against the vain, power-hungry mermaids who have been battling with the Kraken for eons. For Ruby, however, there is a big and immediate problem here: the beautiful, popular new girl at school, Chelsea (voiced by Annie Murphy), happens to be a mermaid. In the end, Ruby must accept who she is and use her powers to protect the one she loves most.
The trailer promises a high school comedy with a twist:
