“Alita” maker revives film series after over 10 (!) years: First

Fans of “Alita: Battle Angel” fervently hope that Robert Rodriguez will soon get serious about a sequel. But first he returns to his biggest film series with “Spy Kids: Armageddon”. Here is the short first trailer:

Robert Rodriguez expands his “Spy Kids” saga, which started in 2001, for the fourth time! A full twelve years after “Spy Kids 4D – All the Time in the World”, the cult director sends the spy kiddies on another mission in “Spy Kids: Armageddon” – with a good portion of star power behind them.

Billy Magnussen (“Aladdin”, “James Bond – No Time to Die”), Gina Rodriguez, known from “Extinction” and “Jane The Virgin”, as well as DC star Zachary Levi, who celebrates a “Shazam!” reunion with “From Dusk Till Dawn” star D.J. Cotrona, are all part of the cast this time. In keeping with tradition, Robert Rodriguez is also relying on a number of other actors with whom he has already worked: Nicholas James Ortiz stood in front of the camera for him for “Hypnotic”, Neal Kodinsky was already in “Alita: Battle Angel” and he has relied on Heath Young in every one of his films since 2019.

“Spy Kids: Armageddon” will launch exclusively on Netflix on 22 September 2023, as the first teaser trailer for the family-friendly agent adventure has now revealed. With this, Rodriguez, who once became famous with bloody cult classics such as “Desperado”, “From Dusk Till Dawn” and “The Faculty”, is once again focusing on action aimed at a younger audience. He already managed to do just that in 2020 on Netflix with “We Can Be Heroes”, which is to be continued soon. And his animated series “Spy Kids: Mission Critical” aka “Spy Kids: On an Important Mission” is also on Netflix.

Meanwhile, the Texan seems to be increasingly renouncing the bloodthirsty material with which he once became world famous. Most recently, he directed the sci-fi thriller “Hypnotic” with Ben Affleck, the Billie Eilish film “Happier Than Ever”, music videos by Lady Gaga and Haley Reinhart as well as episodes of the “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett”. Meanwhile, fans of his manga adaptation “Alita: Battle Angel” can continue to hope for not one, but even two sequels:

THIS IS WHAT AWAITS YOU IN “SPY KIDS: ARMAGEDDON “

“Spy Kids: Armageddon” is not another sequel, instead the fifth film is now a reboot. Meaning: new characters, new actors and a new adventure. In keeping with tradition, Rodriguez was once again able to gather a star-studded cast in front of the camera. The aforementioned ensemble follows in the footsteps of George Clooney, Elijah Wood, Antonio Banderas, Sylvester Stallone, Salma Hayek and Jessica Alba, among others, who also worked in the “Spy Kids” universe. Between 2001 and 2011, this brought it to a total of four cinema films, which were able to bring in over 550 million dollars worldwide.

And that’s what it’s all about: This time it’s the children of the world’s best secret agents who conjure up a dark threat – and unwittingly help a sinister game developer release a dangerous computer virus that could help him gain power over all technology. Now it’s up to the kids to prove they’re made of the same stuff as their parents…
