Plot and background
2018 action star Jason Statham took on a giant prehistoric shark, the megalodon, in “Meg,” which was actually long thought to be extinct. The action horror thriller ended up with a respectable box office takings of around 530 million US dollars, and the film was even more successful on the Chinese market than in the USA. The sequel “The Meg 2: The Trench” is finally a done deal and the theatrical release is also fixed: On August 3, 2023, the battle between Jason Statham and the Megalodons will go into the next round.
“Meg 2: The Deep” – plot
Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) and world-renowned action icon Wu Jing dive into uncharted waters as the leaders of an exploration team. But the two heroes’ daring journey into the deepest depths of the ocean ends in chaos when an unscrupulous mining corporation thwarts their mission. Suddenly, the protagonists find themselves in a relentless fight for survival and a furious race against time. Confronted with giant megs and ruthless environmental destroyers, will they succeed in outsmarting their opponents?

If “The Meg” was already based on the novel of the same name by Steve Allen, “The Trench” is the second book in the series, which was already released in 1999. The plot of “The Trench” takes place four years after the events of “The Meg” and focuses on mysterious creatures that emerge from the Mariana Trench. Incidentally, the book series comes to a total of eight books.

With Jason Statham, the biggest star returns to the set once again. Female co-star Li Bingbing, on the other hand, opts out of the sequel. Instead, Wu Jing joins the cast, who became one of the world’s most successful stars in China thanks to the “Wolf Warrior” series. Also back is Cliff Curtis (“Fear the Walkign Dead”), with new additions Sienna Guillory (“Clifford the Big Red Dog”) and Skyler Samuels (“The Gifted”).
Behind the camera, one key personnel change: Ben Wheatley (“High-Rise”) will be behind the project as director. In the past, had attracted more attention with thrillers, dark comedies, horror films and indie action films. “The Meg 2” is the first major blockbuster in the filmmaker’s career.
Filming began in London in the spring of 2022. The theatrical release date for “Meg 2: The Deep” is August 3, 2023.
