“Tenet” – plot

A new door opens for the determined rookie (John David Washington) after a life-threatening mission. Awakening in a hospital bed, he is certified to have passed a test. He is now part of the “afterlife.”

The world that now awaits him is no less dangerous. On the contrary: time paradoxes, life-threatening chases and missions in lofty heights await him. As part of a team (Robert Pattinson and Clémence Poésy), he is supposed to work on a top-secret mission, about whose true background only a few know. Supposedly, it is about preventing the Third World War, behind which, however, is not the nuclear holocaust, but a far worse fate for mankind.

His employer (Martin Donovan) gives him a word to put the pieces of the puzzle together: “Tenet”. With its help, the rookie gains access to the most powerful (Michael Caine) as well as the most dangerous (Kenneth Branagh) men in the world. Thanks to the wife (Elizabeth Debicki) of Russian businessman Alexei Sator, he will discover a secret that will change the course of time. A race against time begins that challenges his human imagination.

“Tenet” – Cast

As befits a Christopher Nolan film, the cast reads like a who’s who in Hollywood. Leading the cast list is leading man John David Washington (“Blackkklansman”), son of Denzel Washington.

The extended main cast is completed by Robert Pattinson (“The Batman”), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“Kick-Ass”), Elizabeth Debicki (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”), Himesh Patel (“Yesterday”) and Clémence Poésy (“Suddenly Dad”). Nolan has worked with veteran stars such as Michael Caine (“The Dark Knight”) and Kenneth Branagh (“Dunkirk”) in the past.

“Tenet” – theatrical release, locations and backgrounds

The new blockbuster “Tenet” will be released with some delay on August 26, 2020 in German cinemas. The worldwide Corona pandemic is forcing the makers to make an unusual novelty: the simultaneous theatrical release worldwide can not be met, because in the U.S. many cinema chains nationwide continue to be closed. Luckily for Europeans: German viewers do not have to wait any longer and can enjoy the new thriller “Tenet” earlier than US viewers.

The term “Tenet” itself comes from Latin and is also used in English. In Latin it means “to grasp”, “to control” and “to preserve”, from English it is translated as “principle”. The word tenet is also a palindrome, which can be read the same from the back as from the front. Moreover, it is used in the so-called sator square, an ancient play on words that can already be found in the ruins of Pompeii.

Tenet” was shot around the globe in Great Britain, India, Italy, Denmark, Estonia, Norway and the USA. On the set itself, the script, written by Christopher Nolan himself over the course of six years, was a closely guarded secret. Even the actors and crew members didn’t know the dialog and context.

Cineastes can look forward to a 70mm IMAX release. In addition, the film is shot with Imax cameras. This is the third time, after “Interstellar” and “Dunkirk,” that Nolan has worked with cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema. New to Nolan’s extended staff is Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson (“Venom”).
