Barbie

Barbie: In her first live-action movie, famous plastic doll Barbie transforms into a real person – and learns that true beauty only comes from within.

Plot and background

In glittering Barbieland, not everything is as beautiful as it seems at first glance. For behind the facade, strict rules prevail: Anyone who is not pretty or perfect enough is simply cast out. This is also what happens to the plastic doll Barbie (Margot Robbie). After being expelled from Barbieland, the doll magically transforms into a real person. It is only in the real world that Barbie learns to really know herself and her own strengths. Through her adventures, she realizes how important it is to accept herself.

“Barbie” cast

For several years now, Mattel and Warner Bros. have been working on the first live-action film adaptation about Barbie. Since 2019, it is certain that Margot Robbie (“The Suicide Squad”) will embody the beautiful blonde. Her Ken is none other than Ryan Gosling (“La La Land”). Also starring in “Barbie” are America Ferrera (“End of Watch”), Kate McKinnon (“Bombshell – The End of Silence”), Michael Cera (“Scott Pilgrim vs. the Rest of the World”), Ariana Greenblatt (“Avengers: Infinity War”), Issa Rae (“The Photograph”), Rhea Perlman (“Matilda”) and Will Ferrell (“Ricky Bobby – King of the Racers”).

In other roles were John Cena (“Bumblebee”), Ana Cruz Kayne (“Little Women”), Emma Mackey (“Sex Education”), Hari Nef (“Assassination Nation”), Alexandra Shipp (“X-Men” movies), Kingsley Ben-Adir (“Peaky Blinders – Gangs of Birmingham”), Simu Liu (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”), Ncuti Gatwa (“Sex Education”), Scott Evans (“Grace and Frankie”), Jamie Demetriou (“Cruella”), Connor Swindells (“Sex Education,” “Emma. “), Sharon Rooney (“Dumbo”), Nicola Coughlan (“Bridgerton”) and Oscar winner Helen Mirren (“The Queen”) in front of the camera.

“Barbie” real movie: background, theatrical release, FSK

For the first time, the idea for a live-action film was developed by the production studio Cannon Films – in 1986. At first, nothing came of the film adaptation. However, the idea was not out of the world because of that. In the meantime, some time has passed, but Warner Bros and toy manufacturer Mattel have now agreed to realize the “Barbie” film. Greta Gerwig (“Little Women”) will direct, and she and her partner Noah Baumbach (“Marriage Story”) will write the screenplay.

The official theatrical release date for the pink live-action adventure is July 20, 2023. The film fun received the FSK release from 6 years, but to what extent the film is suitable for the young target group, you can learn in the “Barbie” parent guide. “Barbie” soundtrack: Ryan Gosling, Nicki Minaj, Lizzo, Billie Eilish

For anyone who grew up in the 1990s, the catchy hit “Barbie Girl” by Aqua will surely be familiar on the radio. For a long time, there was talk that the catchy song would not make it into the live-action film adaptation, but lead actress Margot Robbie didn’t let up, desperate to hear the song in the soundtrack (via Insider.com). For the “Barbie” movie, you can look forward to a modified version by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice featuring Aqua – the song is titled “Barbie World.” Other performers on the soundtrack include Billie Eilish, Lizzo and Dua Lipa.

Ken actor Ryan Gosling, who received an Oscar nomination for the musical “La La Land,” also performs the song “Just Ken,” whose music video went viral in the run-up to the movie’s release. You can already watch the video:

Of course, “Barbie” is not the first movie adaptation of the toy. The list of all “Barbie” films now includes nearly 40 direct-to-DVD productions. The successful series began with the animated film “Barbie in: The Nutcracker” in 2001, and since then new adventures starring Barbie have been released on DVD about once a year. Thanks to its huge success, the animated series has now even made it to the big screen. In 2015, “Barbie – A Princess in Rockstar Camp” was shown in theaters for two days.
