Serial killer thriller with Oscar winner fights for 2nd place on Netflix

At Netflix, a thriller starring Denzel Washington has won out over a sci-fi smash and Vin Diesel. Steven Spielberg was supposed to direct, but had other plans.

Many viewers:inside already groan when they have to wait two years for a movie. In the case of The Little Things, it was 28. The thriller with Oscar winner Denzel Washington is now celebrating a late triumph on Netflix and has made it to number 2 on the film charts. It was originally to be directed by Steven Spielberg.

At 2 on Netflix: Steven Spielberg rejected thriller over Schindler’s List

Cops Deacon (Washington) and Baxter (Rami Malek) are on the trail of a serial killer in 1990s Los Angeles who already has six people on his conscience. While Deacon still has to fight his own demons, the shady Albert (Jared Leto) gets into the investigators’ sights.

Director John Lee Hancock (The Founder) wrote the script back in 1993 and offered it to various directors. Among them was Steven Spielberg. However, as Hancock said in an interview with Deadline, Jaws was too gloomy: after Schindler’s List, he wanted to concentrate on something lighter.

The template then passed through the hands of Clint Eastwood before the project faded into obscurity for decades. It wasn’t until 2019 that it picked up steam again. Hancock eventually agreed to direct it himself.

As Metacritic shows, reviews for the film were very average when it was released in 2021. With its place in the Netflix top 10, the thriller celebrates a small, late victory. After all, it beat out sci-fi smashers like Valerian – The City of a Thousand Planets or xXx: The Return of Xander Cage with Vin Diesel for it.
