Last Sentinel: Dystopian science fiction thriller about four soldiers* awaiting relief at a military base in the middle of the ocean.
Plot and background
2063: The Earth is almost completely flooded, only two continents are left and form the center of life for the rest of humanity. But where resources are scarce, the enmity among themselves is not far. There is war.
At a military outpost in the middle of the ocean, four people are waiting to be relieved – and have been for several years: Soldier and psychologist Cassidy (Kate Bosworth), stoic Sergeant Hendrichs (Thomas Kretschmann), tough-as-nails Sullivan (Lucien Laviscount) and practical-minded Baines (Martin McCann). After their long solitude, they watch with skepticism as an unmanned boat approaches their post – is it friendly or hostile? And why can’t they make contact with home? Could they be the last survivors on Earth?
“Last Contact” – background, cast, theatrical release
Estonian director Tanel Toom (“Truth and Justice”) directs “Last Contact”, a film dedicated to the question of how the world could change in as little as 50 years with rapidly rising sea levels. The idea for the film came about as part of the environmental expedition “2041 Foundation” in the middle of Antarctica and is intended to sensitize the audience to the possible dangers of climate change.
With stars like Kate Bosworth (“Barbarian”), Lucien Laviscount (“Emily in Paris”), Martin McCann (“Marcella”) and German Hollywood star Thomas Kretschmann (“Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny”), the result is a clever end-time thriller with an international cast. The screenplay was written by Malachi Smyth (“The Score”). Filming took place in Estonia and the Baltic Sea, with post-production mainly in Germany.
On July 27, 2023 “Last Contact” will be released in German cinemas, the FSK recommends the film from 16 years.
