Hellboy: In the reboot of the “Hellboy” movies, “Stranger Things” star David Harbour steps into the role of the red half-demon to tell a new, grown-up story.
Plot and background
For two films, Ron Perlman played Hellboy, a half-demon summoned by the Nazis to usher in the apocalypse. In the action-packed reboot “Hellboy: Call of Darkness,” the cards are reshuffled – an all-new cast tells a much darker, more adult story based on Mike Mignola’s brilliant comics.

“Hellboy 3: Call of Darkness” – plot
The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.), led by Hellboy’s adoptive father Trevor Bruttenholm (Ian McShane), steps into the breach whenever supernatural forces threaten humanity. The intervention force consists of Hellboy (David Harbour), a half-demon with a pretty bad temper, the soldier Ben Daimio (Daniel Dae Kim), who can turn into a jaguar, and the magician Alice Monaghan (Sasha Lane). But this time Hellboy and his team are pushed to their limits.
The ancient witch Nimue (Milla Jovovich), also called the Blood Queen, has risen again. According to legend, her resurrection marks the end of the world – an event to which the half-demon Hellboy himself has a rather ambivalent relationship. After all, his right hand is not only an unbeatably powerful weapon, but also the key to the end of the world. Will the seductive Nimue succeed in drawing Hellboy to her side? Even the legendary magician Merlin (Brian Gleeson) could not resist her.
“Hellboy: Call of Darkness” – theatrical release and FSK
For a long time, fans of the brilliant “Hellboy” comic series by Mike Mignola had to wait for a reunion with Red. After a long back and forth, it is now finally certain that the time will finally come in spring 2019: “Hellboy: Call of Darkness” will be released in German cinemas on April 11, 2019. Fans can expect a much more adult comic book adaptation. “Hellboy – Call of Darkness” has received an FSK age release from 16 years.
“Hellboy” without Ron Perlman
For some fans of the two previous “Hellboy” movies, “Hellboy” (2004) and “Hellboy – The Golden Army” (2008), it may come as a shock: Lead actor Ron Perlman will not return for the reboot. Although Perlman will be sorely missed, this means that a new “Hellboy” movie will finally hit theaters after director Guillermo Del Toro had long tried to complete his budding trilogy.
Disputes over a sequel have dragged on for a long time. Fortunately, an agreement has now been reached that will take “Hellboy” in a whole new direction right away. For the reboot, for which comic creator Mike Mignola wrote the screenplay together with comic and novel authors Andrew Cosby and Christopher Golden, is to reboot the film series darkly and finally do justice to the violence of the comic template. The director is Neil Marshall, who has already proven himself a capable horror director and epic battle painter with “The Descent” and the two “Game of Thrones” sequels “The Watchers on the Wall” and “Blackwater.”
As unfortunate as it is to lose Ron Perlman – a worthy replacement for the lead role has been found in “Stranger Things” star David Harbour. As the grumpy but sincere Chief Hopper, Harbour has already mastered a role that bears some similarities to the grouchy half-demon Hellboy. And the cast of Ian McShane (“John Wick: Chapter 3”) and Milla Jovovich (“Resident Evil: The Final Chapter”) as the villainess also suggests a sure hand. Nothing should stand in the way of a new trilogy!
