Kandahar: Action thriller starring Gerard Butler, who is forced to flee to Kandahar, Afghanistan, after an undercover mission in Iran goes awry.

plot and background

Tom Harris (Gerard Butler) is a black ops agent on an undercover mission in Iran. There he is to sabotage an Iranian nuclear reactor. When a whistleblower uncovers CIA involvement, Tom is a wanted man. He has exactly 30 hours to cover the distance between Iran and a nondescript airport in Kandahar, Afghanistan alive – 400 miles separate him.

The only person accompanying him is Afghan translator Mo (Navid Negahban). Mo is reluctant to make the journey because he had to watch his son being killed by the Taliban. Since then, he has blamed Western forces and warlords for the constant bloodshed in his country. Once the ice-cold killer Kahil (Ali Fazal) is set upon them, Tom and Mo depend on each other to arrive at their destination alive. A gripping fight for survival begins.

“Kandahar” – background, cast, theatrical release

In the action flick “Kandahar” swashbuckler Gerard Butler once again shows what he is made of. After “Greenland” and “Angel has Fallen” it is already his third collaboration with director Ric Roman Waugh. This time the action takes him to the dangerous no man’s land of Iran and Afghanistan.

The screenplay was written by Mitchell LaFortune, who knows the situation on the ground very well due to several missions of the intelligence service DIA in Afghanistan. For Waugh and Butler, the script, which is as emotional as it is authentic, was the basis for their commitment to the project. While Butler’s role is adapted from various people, the role of Mo the translator is based on a person with whom the screenwriter worked intensively between 2011 and 2013. Filming took place in Saudi Arabia, where “Kandahar” advanced to become the most expensive film project in the country.

On August 17, 2023, the emotional and authentic action film “Kandahar” will be released in German cinemas.
