Enkel für Fortgeschrittene: Return of the popular senior trio around Maren Kroymann, Heiner Lauterbach and Barbara Sukowa, who have to take on teenage grandchildren this time.

Plot and background

As surrogate grandparents, friends Karin (Maren Kroymann), Philippa (Barbara Sukowa) and Gerhard (Heiner Lauterbach) have already passed on wisdom to the youngest generation, even if it got a little too colorful for them here and there. Karin therefore took some well-deserved time off and set off for New Zealand, a long-cherished dream. Back from their trip, new challenges are already waiting for the retired trio.

Together, they take over the management of the school store as a maternity replacement, thus helping with homework supervision and dealing with pubescent teenagers day in, day out. Not an easy task: party nights that get out of hand, smartphone generation and great (romantic) emotional chaos among the teens cause all kinds of problems. This task soon turns the lives of everyone involved upside down.

“Advanced Grandchildren” – background, cast, theatrical release

Following “Grandchildren for Beginners” (2020), “Grandchildren for Advanced” is the sequel to the hit comedy. Instead of dealing with toddler and preschool-age children, the comedy now turns its attention to the equally challenging teenage years. In 2020, the film team still had to deal with the consequences of the corona pandemic – the comedy opened in theaters five weeks before theaters closed – but the huge audience interest proved that the comedy demanded a sequel.

Not only did the team around director Wolfgang Groos and screenwriter Robert Löhr come together again behind the camera, the stars of the predecessor with Maren Kroymann (“Mein Leben und ich”), Barbara Sukowa (“Der Schwarm”) and Heiner Lauterbach (“Kalte Füße”) were immediately involved again. What’s more, Löhr incorporated suggestions from the ensemble into the script work. Filming took place in the early summer of 2022 in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The theatrical release of “Enkel für Fortgeschrittene” is on September 7, 2023, just in time before the Kinofest 2023 takes place on the weekend of September 9 and 10, 2023, in which every film costs only 5 euros in every theater.
