With season 3 of “Ragnarok” the next popular Netflix series comes to an end in the upcoming week. Fantasy fans will also get their money’s worth at the streaming provider in the next few days with the fun-filled “Ghostbusters: Legacy. “
It’s Sunday again, so it’s high time to take a look at all the movies and series that await us at the streaming top dog Netflix in the next seven days. We have to say goodbye to two popular series, while everyone with a soft spot for Adam Sandler, Steven Soderbergh and/or the Ghostbsuters can look forward to new movies. So long story short:
These are the Netflix highlights of the week of August 21-27, 2023 – as always, sorted by day of the week:
MONDAY: QUIET START TO THE WEEK
On Monday, Netflix is giving you some time to catch up on one or two of the titles that may have been piling up on your watchlist. For the start of the week, nothing new has been announced yet, but on Tuesday it will start leisurely…
Tuesday: SPORT-DOKU & EIN KINOFILM ALS SERIE
In the Netflix documentary series “Untold” everything revolves around sports that are popular mainly in America, but now also have many followers in the rest of the world. And so many are probably already eagerly awaiting the series “Untold: Swamp Kings,” which looks at how the stumbling Florida Gators became a successful football team in the 2000s.
Meanwhile, something special awaits you with “303 – The Series,” which is a longer and more in-depth version of Hans Weingartner’s gently told but nonetheless stirring 2018 love road movie.
WEDNESDAY: KOREA DAY
No Netflix week goes by without new series fodder from South Korea (which is also home to “Squid Game,” by far the most successful Netflix series ever). On Wednesday, this is the case twice – even if the two new starts could hardly be more different, despite the main characters from the same work environment: In “The Devil Judge” a mysterious judge implements his idea of justice in a dystopian future – including live broadcasting. In “Destined With You” we also follow a lawyer. However, he struggles with an ancient curse, which could finally be broken thanks to a newly budding love.
Things also get romantic in “Für immer Liebe²”, the third part of the Polish RomCom series after “Liebe²” and “Nochmal Liebe²”. Anyone interested in film history, on the other hand, should take a look at the miniseries “Bardot,” in which the life of French screen icon Brigitte Bardot (played here by newcomer Julia de Nunez) is retold in fictionalized form.
THURSDAY: THE FINALE OF “RAGNARÖK “
Thursday we have to say goodbye to Thor. We’re not talking about Marvel’s version of the Norse God of Thunder (who we’ll almost certainly see again in the MCU), but the Thor reincarnation Magne (David Stakston) from the Scandinavian Netflix series “Ragnarok,” which is now coming to an end with Season 3. In this season, we find out whether the twilight of the gods, which was hinted at in the title from the beginning, is really in store for us and whether the modern Thor might sacrifice himself for humanity in a battle with the now unleashed world serpent.
Things could also get exciting in the new miniseries “Who Is Erin Carter?”, in which a young British woman in Barcelona is caught up in her brutal past. Meanwhile, fans of anime fare with fists flying will be treated to the second season of the gritty series “Baki Hanma. “
FRIDAY: ADAM-SANDLER-REFRESH
For several years now, comedy superstar Adam Sandler has been shooting movies almost exclusively for Netflix. In 2020, a corresponding deal with the streaming provider was renewed and now, after the scary comedy “Hubie Halloween”, the basketball drama “Hustle” and the mega-hit sequel “Murder Mystery 2”, the fourth film since this agreement is due.
In the coming-of-age fun “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah,” however, Sandler this time only takes on a supporting role as the father of the main character Stacy (played by Sandler’s real-life daughter Sunny Sandler), who is actually at the center. The teenager and her best friend Lydia (Samantha Lorraine) have dreamed of celebrating an epic bat mitzvah since childhood. But when it finally approaches, a boy, of all people, comes between them and threatens to destroy their friendship.
Meanwhile, things get far darker with the Spanish horror film “Murder, As It Is Written,” in which eight friends have to deal with a killer clown who knows more about them than they’d like.
SATURDAY: STAR-STUDDED THRILLER HIGHLIGHT
If Netflix is usually stingy with reloads on the weekends, this time we can look forward to no less than two exciting licensed titles. Kicking things off on Saturday is Steven Soderbergh’s blackly humorous neo-noir thriller “No Sudden Move,” which stars Don Cheadle, Benicio del Toro, Brendan Fraser, David Harbour, Jon Hamm and Ray Liotta as they get caught up in a gangster story in 1950s Detroit in which little is as it first appears.
SUNDAY: LATE “GHOSTBUSTERS” RESUME & “RIVERDALE” END
On Sunday, things continue on a high note. After the “Ghostbusters” reboot with female ghost hunters from 2016 was received very mixed, they tied 2021 with “Ghostbusters: Legacy” again more directly to the first two parts of the popular cult franchise (Part 1 is even one of the best fantasy films of all time by audience* rating with us) – and with success. “Legacy” is a charming family fantasy adventure that introduces us to a new generation of ghost hunters and whets our appetite for the next sequel, “Ghostbusters: Firehouse,” which has been announced for 2024.
Meanwhile, all fans of “Riverdale” have to be strong, as the very last episode of the mystery series is also on the Netflix schedule at the end of the week.
