New on Netflix: Horror highlight with Johnny Depp and a (hopefully)

by Han

Four years before “Pirates of the Caribbean”, Johnny Depp already took on sinister forces in “The Nine Gates”. The worth seeing occult thriller is now available as a Netflix subscription. Also new: The final 5th season of “Disenchantment”.

Even though he recently tried his hand at a cinema comeback with “Jeanne du Barry”, Johnny Depp recently made headlines, especially with the mudslinging against his ex-wife Amber Heard (rehashed for example in the Netflix documentary “Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard”). This was also bad news for many film fans, as Depp had a career peppered with many highlights up to that point, which will probably never fully recover despite the court rulings in his favor.

With “Pirates of the Caribbean,” the now 60-year-old finally rose to superstardom in 2003. But even before that, the actor was seen in some iconic roles and special films. One such is the occult thriller “The Nine Gates,” which was unjustly somewhat lost in theaters at the turn of the millennium, but can now be caught up on Netflix.

“THE NINE GATES”: DARK, AMBIGUOUS, DIABOLICAL

In “The Nine Gates” Johnny Depp slips into the role of antiquarian Dean Corso, who specializes in tracking down particularly rare and valuable books. Therefore, one day he is hired by the rich collector Boris Balkan (Frank Langella) to verify the authenticity of a mysterious book, with the help of which one can supposedly summon the devil. But the further he pursues the matter, the more the mysterious and soon dangerous events accumulate…

With this film adaptation of Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s novel “The Club Dumas”, “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Pianist” director Roman Polanski has created an atmospheric mix of horror, mystery and neo-noir thriller, which tightens the tension screw more and more without any clumsy jump scares, but rather through the leisurely building, increasingly threatening atmosphere.

Who prefers its fantastic material with a discreet diabolical touch a little more cheerful, but gets another highlight on Netflix. From today, September 1, 2023, the fifth, but also the last season of fantasy comedy series “Disenchantment”, which was created by “Simpsons” mastermind Matt Groening, is now available for download.

In the grand finale, the swashbuckling Queen Bean (voice in the original: Abbi Jacobson / German version: Jenny Löffler) must come to grips with her magical powers in order to confront her evil mother and save her kingdom Dreamland from ruin.
