Much more than “One Piece”: These anime adaptations are waiting for you at

by Mike

You’re done with “One Piece?” Then you can look forward to these live-action anime adaptations coming to Netflix. Among them: “My Hero Academia,” “Death Note” (from the “Stranger Things” creators!), and a “Pokémon” real series.

Netflix has done it: “One Piece” is an American anime adaptation that has actually succeeded and is currently thrilling numerous fans and subscribers. Those who are already through with the eight episodes of the first season and are now waiting for a second season or other follow-up, can look forward to several more anime adaptations on Netflix – among others from the “Stranger Things” creators!

“YU YU HAKUSHO “

We don’t have to wait too much longer for the next anime adaptation on Netflix: according to Netflix, “Yu Yu Hakusho” will be released in December 2023. For familiarization and/or preparation, you can currently watch all 112 episodes of the original anime from the 1990s on the streaming service.

Yu Yu Hakusho” is about a petty thug named Yusuke Urameshi (Takumi Kitamura), who one day saves the life of a child and dies in the process. Because neither heaven nor hell expected such a good deed, they send him back to the world of the living – as a ghost detective who fights demons and other supernatural creatures…

“AVATAR – LORD OF THE ELEMENTS “

Of course: “Avatar – The Lord of the Elements” is not an anime series, even if it is sometimes called or classified as such. But even if “Avatar” is an American animated series, there are certainly certain stylistic and content overlaps – and those who liked “One Piece” on Netflix may also find it here.

The “Avatar – The Lord of the Elements” live-action series will be released on Netflix later in 2024, possibly as early as February 2024.The series is about Aang (Gordon Cormier), the last surviving Airbender, who is tasked with bringing peace to his world divided into different nations (Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, Air Nomads).

“MY HERO ACADEMIA “

Continue with a project that was at least announced not too long ago: Together with the film production company Legendary, Netflix wants to implement a live-action film adaptation of the anime “My Hero Academia”. The currently busy screenwriter Joby Harold (“The Flash,” “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”) is responsible for this.

It is not yet known when “My Hero Academia” will start on Netflix, but a start before 2025 is not to be expected. My Hero Academia” is about young Izuku, who has never had superpowers before but is given them after a heroic deed. Now he has to prove himself at a school for superheroes…

“DEATH NOTE “

“Death Note” and Netflix: This has already gone wrong once, as Adam Wingard’s 2017 live-action film thoroughly flopped with fans and the trade press. But behind the new attempt are two men who stand for strong and successful Netflix series: “Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer.

The only question is when the Duffer brothers will find time for their “Death Note” adaptation; after all, they are very busy with the fifth season of “Stranger Things.” Although author and producer Halia Abdel-Meguid is the main person responsible for the Netflix adaptation, it may still be quite a while before the project, which was announced in 2022, is realized and appears on Netflix.

“Death Note” is about an extremely intelligent student, Light Yagami, who one day finds the titular notebook that kills all those whose names are written in it.

“POKÉMON “

Yes, that’s right: after “Pokémon: Master Detective Pikachu” (and a possible sequel), a “Pokémon” live-action series is also said to be coming, from “Lucifer” writer and producer Joe Henderson. However, the project was announced more than two years ago in July 2021 and nothing new has been heard about it since.

Since the “Pokémon” franchise continues to enjoy great popularity and new fans are joining all the time, we can very well imagine that the project will actually be realized one day. This is also supported by the stop-motion series “The Pokémon Concierge,” which is set to launch on Netflix in December 2023.

“SWORD ART ONLINE “

A film adaptation of the “Sword Art Online” series was announced back in 2016, and the project finally moved on to Netflix in 2018, but there has been radio silence for five years. It is not clear whether the showrunner Laeta Kalogridis, who was announced at the time, is still on board, but she has already worked with Netflix on the science fiction series “Altered Carbon” – so it is conceivable.

To be on the safe side, we’re putting a big question mark behind the “Sword Art Online” live-action series. But who knows: Maybe the success of “One Piece” on Netflix will breathe new life into this adaptation?
