Dalíland: biopic about Salvador Dalí and the last years of his troubled marriage to his wife and muse Gala.
Plot and background
Young gallery assistant James Linton (Christopher Briney) arrives at the St. Regis Hotel in New York in 1974 to attend to 70-year-old surrealist Salvador Dalí (Ben Kingsley), who is staying there for a few months with his wife and muse Gala (Barbara Sukowa), as he does every year. Unexpectedly, the artist quickly asks the young man to assist him as an assistant in the preparations for a new exhibition. A world of parties and creative excess awaits Linton in the dazzling Dalíland alongside models, music and movie stars, and a wild mix of high and low society. The aging artist Dalí, who impresses everyone with his genius and at the same time reveals a touching vulnerability in private, is at the center of this colorful hustle and bustle. The painter’s greatest weakness is his wife Gala. When she becomes attracted to an up-and-coming young musical star and generously finances him, she not only puts their life together in luxury at risk, but also their almost fifty-year marriage to Salvador Dalí.
