Shortly already stamped as a flop, “Elemental” got the curve again – especially in Germany, where it is even one of the most successful films of the year. As of now, the animated film highlight is also available on Disney+.
In the first few weeks after its theatrical release, things didn’t look too rosy for “Elemental.” The audience did not exactly flock to the cinemas, so that after the “Toy Story” spin-off “Lightyear” the next box office flop for the famous animation film studio Pixar loomed – but in the end it did not go quite that way: “Elemental” advanced to a real sleeper hit and is thus not only represented in Germany last weekend in the top 5 of the current box office charts, but with now over 1.86 million tickets sold in this country also among the five most successful films of 2023!
While a still impressive 67,500 people went to the local movie theaters for the film last weekend, you can now already experience the animated film on streaming subscription: “Elemental” is available on Disney+ starting today, September 13, 2023.
Thanks to a current promotion, you can use Disney+ for three months for only 1.99 euros per month – and also catch up on some other Disney highlights from the recent past, such as the already available “Arielle, the Mermaid” live action adaptation. After that, you can simply cancel the subscription or automatically switch to a Premium membership for 11.99 euros per month.
By the way, you also have the option of purchasing “Elemental” as a video-on-demand. Amazon Prime Video*, among others, already offers the film – but you’ll have to pay a lot more for it there.

That’s the story: In Element City, many creatures descended from one of the four elements live in a pile: Water, Earth, Air and Fire. However, quick-witted fire girl Ember Lumen (voice in the original: Leah Lewis) and cool water boy Wade Ripple (Mamoudou Athie) can’t do much with each other at first. They think they are too different. Something like friendship seems an impossibility. Fire and water, that can’t work at all! Or can it?
As the two spend more and more time together, they finally realize that they have more in common than they thought. Do opposites really attract in the end, as the famous proverb says?
Peter Sohn, a New Yorker and son of Korean immigrants, should not be unknown to Disney fans. Back in 2009, the later “Arlo & Spot” maker took his first seat in the director’s chair for Pixar for the short film “Partly Cloudy”. In addition, Sohn has worked as a voice actor, animator and story artist on numerous other animated hits – from “The Incredibles” and “The Incredibles 2” to “Alles steht Kopf” and “Ratatouille” and “Lightyear”. Sohn has therefore more than internalized the Disney or Pixar DNA, as he now proves with his latest film:
“Finally another prototypical Pixar film,” FILMSTARTS editor-in-chief Christoph Petersen praises “Elemental” in our review – which gives it a strong 4 out of 5 possible stars. The review positively emphasizes the countless creative ideas with which every single scene is virtually “stuffed”, the fantastic animations and the once again magical score by Thomas Newman. Only the fast pace brings a downside, not only does it make the film incredibly entertaining, but it also leaves a bit little room for the emotions. Apart from that, however, “Elemental” is fun for young and old – with always something new to discover.
