A Haunting in Venice: thriller by and starring Kenneth Branagh, in which master detective Hercule Poirot investigates post-war Venice for the third time in his most gruesome case yet.
Plot and background
Actually, master detective Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) is retired, but he must investigate again for a friend. The master detective is staying in Venice in the post-war period and is asked for the help of his US colleague Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey). He is to uncover the fraud of a medium at a séance.
That night he is invited to the catacombs to attend the séance. Present are not only Ariadne Oliver, the medium Mrs. Reynolds (Michelle Yeoh), the grieving mother Rowena Drake (Kelly Reilly) as well as the séance guests Dr. Leslie Ferrier (Jamie Dornan), Leopold Ferrier (Jude Hill), Maxime Gerard (Kyle Allen), Nicolas Holland (Ali Khan), Desdemona Holland (Emma Laird), Olga Seminoff (Camille Cottin) and Vitale Portfoglio (Riccardo Scamarcio).
After the seance, one person is dead. Hercule Poirot does not let all the participants leave before he has found out, with rational explanations, who is responsible for the murder. He does not accept the explanation that a ghost did the deed. However, the longer Poirot lingers in Venice that night, the more gruesome the event becomes.
The trailer promises the creepiest case yet for Hercule Poirot:
“A Haunting in Venice” – background, cast, theatrical release
Freely based on the Agatha Christie novel “The Halloween Party”, respectively “The Snow White Party”, director and leading actor Kenneth Branagh films for the third time after “Murder on the Orient Express” and “Death on the Nile” a detective novel about the master detective Hercule Poirot.
Unlike in the previous installments, however, Branagh takes numerous creative liberties. The plot is shifted from London to Venice, for example, and comes across as far creepier due to the aspect of the séance.
