With 178.6 million hours watched, this film is the number one most successful non-English language Netflix film, and now it’s getting a sequel: Netflix is unleashing the Troll once again! The same team is behind “Troll 2”.
Hardly anyone would have expected this before its launch: “Troll” by “Tomb Raider” director Roar Uthaug really took off on Netflix in the winter of 2022/2023 and, after a record start, also became the most successful non-English-language Netflix film ever – well ahead of films like “Nothing New in the West” or “Blood Red Sky” from Germany or the Spanish hit “The Shaft”.
With 178.6 million hours watched or 103 million views (the new unit of measurement for Netflix successes), “Troll” is still number one in this list. That is considerably fewer views than “Tyler Rake: Extraction” and “Tyler Rake: Extraction 2”, which are currently the 9th and 10th most successful English-language films with 135 and 134 million views respectively, or even “Red Notice” (with almost 231 million views at number 1). However, “Troll” may also have been much cheaper than these Netflix blockbusters.

This is also supported by the fact that “Troll” will now get a sequel, as first reported by the US industry magazine Variety. “Troll 2” will once again be directed by Roar Uthaug and some of the crucial people behind the camera will also return. As Variety reports, Espen Aukan will once again write the script and Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud will once again serve as producers.
In a statement, Uthaug spoke of how it had been a lifelong dream to make the first “Troll” film and called the worldwide success of the Norwegian film “incredible”. Producers Horn and Sinkerud, meanwhile, have already hinted at what will happen next in “Troll 2”, saying another story revolving around a Norwegian fairy tale character is planned.
In “Troll”, which received a good 3.5 out of 5 stars from FILMSTARTS writer Lutz Granert, a gigantic stone monster comes to life and flattens everything in its path. At the end of the film, the titular monster is defeated. In a mid-credit scene, however, a new threat is hinted at, which bursts out of the Norwegian mountains – whether it is another troll or another legendary figure, we will have to wait and see.
But “Troll” fans won’t have to wait too long: According to Variety, filming on “Troll 2” is set to begin as early as 2024, depending on exactly when, a Netflix launch in late 2024 or 2025 at the latest would be easily possible.
