Weekend Rebels: Warm-hearted comedy starring Florian David Fitz as a father trying to find a favourite football club with his autistic son.
Plot and background
Ten-year-old Jason (Cecilio Andresen) hates loud crowds, loves routines and structures his everyday life with fixed rules. Jason is autistic. While his dad Mirco (Florian David Fitz) is away a lot for work, his mum Fatime (Aylin Tezel) organises the demanding family life. When Jason becomes increasingly conspicuous at school and the family’s class teacher recommends a change to a special school, Mirco, as the father, must also show commitment. He makes a pact with his son: if Mirco helps him find a favourite football club, Jason promises to make an effort at school and be less provoked. But Jason wants to make his choice carefully and only decide on a club when he has seen all 56 teams of the first, second and third division live in their respective stadiums. Important individual criteria such as mascots, sustainability, players’ rituals and the colours of the football boots play an important role in the ten-year-old’s decision. Weekend after weekend, father and son thus leave their home routines behind as they travel across Germany and learn to understand each other better in the process.
