The Creator: Sci-fi epic from “Rogue One” director about the battle between humans and artificial intelligence

Plot and background

In the near future, there is a war between humans and robots. Joshua (John David Washington), separated from his wife Maya (Gemma Chan) in an attack, has had to go five years without her. Now he is once again sent to the war zone on an important mission. The tough special forces soldier is to search for a mysterious weapon from “The Creator” with an elite squad. This artificial intelligence has created a weapon that has the potential to end the war – and incidentally wipe out humanity.

But it is only when he arrives deep behind enemy lines that he discovers the mysterious weapon is a robot in the form of a human child named Alphie (Madeline Yuna Voyles). The moral dilemma for Joshua is undeniable: Does he kill an innocent child who is a robot but means no harm to the world? Or does he take it into his care, putting his own life and the lives of those around him in danger?

“The Creator” – background, cast, cinema release

With his debut feature “Monster”, director Gareth Edwards was able to let off steam in the sci-fi genre for the first time, in the meantime he directed films like “Godzilla” (2014) and “Star Wars: Rogue One” (2016). “The Creator” is his follow-up work, which he says is an “ambitious indie blockbuster”. Edwards wrote the screenplay together with Chris Weitz (“About a Boy”).

The main roles are played by John David Washington (“Tenet”), Gemma Chan (“Eternals”), Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai”), Allison Janney (“I Tonya”) and up-and-coming actress Madeleine Yuna Voyles in her first role.

Filming for “The Creator” took place in eight different countries: Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Nepal, Japan, Indonesia as well as the UK and the USA. On 28 September 2023, “The Creator” will be released in German cinemas.
