New on Netflix this week: The big “Walking Dead” finale & the

by Mike

The streaming week on Netflix is once again jam-packed. In addition to the very last episodes of “The Walking Dead”, “Lupin” finally continues. In addition, the horror shocker “The Pope’s Exorcist” is available just six months after its cinema release.

As in every week, we present you again on Sunday evening the (potential) highlights that await us in the next seven days on Netflix. From Monday to Sunday, the streaming service has a number of hits in store – from the end of a zombie era to wacky DC action and the first horror film with Russell Crowe to the new season of an absolute Netflix series hit that fans have had to wait over two years for.

But let’s get down to business: here are the Netflix highlights for the week of 2 to 8 October 2023 – sorted by day of the week:

MONDAY: SHORT BREATHER

After Netflix kicked off the month yesterday (Sunday) with titles like the Martin Scorsese historical drama “Age of Innocence” and all seasons of the cult series “Shameless”, the streaming provider is taking it a little easier on Monday – before it picks up the pace again on Tuesday…

TUESDAY: “THE WALKING DEAD” COMES TO AN END

For its grand finale, the zombie perennial “The Walking Dead” has been given an XXL season with 24 episodes, released in three parts with eight episodes each. The big disadvantage: fans had to be patient between the individual parts of the eleventh season. At the end of 2022, however, the last “Walking Dead” episode actually flickered across the screens – and already here in Germany on Disney+.

Netflix subscribers, on the other hand, had to wait almost a whole year longer, but now the wait is finally over for them too: the last eight episodes will bring the end-time series to a halfway round conclusion on Netflix on Tuesday. However, the franchise will still continue with several spin-offs in the future.

WEDNESDAY: ONE OF THE BEST DC MOVIES

After David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad” met with little reception, “Guardians Of The Galaxy” creator James Gunn tried his hand at a new film about the anti-hero team in 2021 – and promptly delivered one of the craziest and most fun blockbusters of recent years, and what we consider one of the best DC movies ever, with “The Suicide Squad” coming to Netflix on Wednesday.

However, if you can’t handle even slightly different comic blockbusters, you can check out the Filipino family drama “Keys To The Heart” or the sci-fi thriller “The UFO Conspiracy” with, among others, “The X-Files” UFO expert Gillian Anderson. And for fans of true stories, there is the extreme mountaineering documentary “Duel on the Abyss” and the four-part documentary series “Beckham” about the English football star.

THURSDAY: “LUPIN” SEASON 3

The French heist series “Lupin” is one of the most successful Netflix series ever, its view numbers dwarfing even some of the streaming provider’s big US flagships. Still, it took almost two and a half years for master thief Assane Diop (Omar Sy) to return, but he finally gets to celebrate with the third “Lupin” instalment on Thursday.

New streaming fodder from outside the US also includes the British coming-of-age series “Everything Now” and the Indian spy thriller “Khufiya”.

FRIDAY: COMPETITION FOR (THE) “JOHN WICK”(-SPIN-OFF)?

With “Ballerina”, the popular “John Wick” series is soon to get a spin-off. But Netflix is already bringing us an actioner with the same name from South Korea, which not only shares the title with the “John Wick” spin-off, but also revolves around a powerful woman on a quest for revenge.

For a little less confusion (but also less action) on Friday, the Mexican comedy “Deadly Invitation,” reminiscent of the series highlight “Only Murders In The Building” in terms of premise, and the sixth season of the “Big Bang Theory” spin-off “Young Sheldon” should provide.

SATURDAY: FANTASY-COMEDY FROM KOREA

Only one day after “Ballerina”, we can expect the next Netflix update from South Korea on Saturday, but in series form. In “Strong Girl Nam-Soon”, a young woman with supernatural powers returns to her homeland in search of her biological family, but becomes embroiled in a drug scandal in the process.

SUNDAY: CINEMA HORROR SHOCKER FROM 2023

Similar to the recent dino sci-fi thriller “65”, “The Pope’s Exorcist” has already landed on Netflix just six months after its theatrical release. We can’t really recommend the scary flick, as it follows the well-trodden path of exorcism shockers. But at least Oscar winner Russell Crowe provides entertainment, taking on the lead role in a genuine horror film for the first time in his career – and clearly having fun in the process.
