Plot and background
Titina, a little terrier dog, lives on the streets of Rome in the 1920s until one day Umberto Nobile, an airship engineer, picks her up in front of a butcher shop and takes her home to his family. When he is contacted out of the blue by the Norwegian explorer superstar Roald Amundsen, who wants Nobile to build him an airship to conquer the North Pole, the latter senses an opportunity to go down in history. With Titina in their luggage, the unequal trio sets out on an expedition to the last undiscovered place on earth. Their search is successful and Titina discovers the icy world of the Arctic. But the joy doesn’t last long, because soon the two men start fighting over explorer glory.
“Titina – An animal adventure at the North Pole” – background, cast, theatrical release
On May 12, 1926, Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen, Italian airship engineer Umberto Nobile, Nobile’s dog Titina and the crew of the airship “Norge” flew over the North Pole for the first time after decades of man’s attempts to conquer the last unreached northern white spot on the map.
As a Norwegian, award-winning director Kajsa Næss (“It’s Up to You”) was familiar with legendary polar explorer Roald Amundsen and his achievements; after all, he is revered as a national hero in Norway. But the presence of the little dog Titina on the expedition surprised the filmmaker. Together with screenwriter Per Schreiner, the idea of an animated film for young and old was thus born, based on the historical framework, which focuses on interpersonal relationships and is told from the perspective of a small dog, rather than depicting the usual heroic story of men conquering nature.
On November 2, 2023, the animated adventure about Titina and the discovery of the North Pole will open in German cinemas with an age rating of 6 years.
