Anatomy of a Fall: French relationship drama starring Sandra Hüller, who must defend herself in court as the prime suspect after the death of her husband.
Plot and background
German novelist Sandra (Sandra Hüller) lives a secluded life with her French husband Samuel (Samuel Theis) and their eleven-year-old visually impaired son Daniel (Milo Machado Graner) in a small town near Grenoble in the French Alps. One sunny day, Samuel is found dead in the snow at the foot of the house by Daniel and his guide dog. The exact cause of his sudden death is initially unclear, and it isn’t long before discrepancies begin to pile up and Sandra becomes the prime suspect in a potential murder case. What follows is a grueling circumstantial trial that gradually publicly dissects in detail not only the circumstances of Samuel’s death, but Sandra and Samuel’s tumultuous relationship.

French filmmaker Justine Triet (“Sibyl”) brings a relationship drama with a suspenseful twist to the big screen with “Anatomy of a Case.” The contradictions in their private lives are put under the microscope by the judiciary in an unvarnished and hard-hitting way. German actress Sandra Hüller (“Toni Erdmann”), as German writer Sandra, must defend herself in a French court against accusations that she pushed her husband to his death from the balcony of a chalet. Swann Arlaud (“Praise God”), Milo Machado Graner (“Waiting for Bojangles”), Samuel Theis (“Party Girl”) and French musician Jehnny Beth were in front of the camera in other roles in the gripping drama.
“Anatomy of a Case” earned director Justine Triet her second invitation to the Cannes Film Festival, where the drama won the top prize, the Palme d’Or. Following the positive response at Cannes and the Locarno Film Festival, “Anatomy of a Case” will be released in cinemas here on November 2, 2023.
