The trailer for the comedy “Quiz Lady” features a promising cast and gives the impression that we can expect some funny entertainment here. Will you tune in when the movie comes to the streaming program of Disney+ in the near future?
For decades, quiz shows have been one of the biggest ratings drivers on TV. Of course, similar to soccer, everyone can have their say and know/do better than the actors on the screen at home in their armchair. “Citadel”, “This Is Us” and “American Horror Story” director Jessica Yu has now knitted her new feature film around this fascination of millions.
“Quiz Lady” had its world premiere in early September 2023 at the renowned Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). There, the title earned mostly positive reviews (“81 percent fresh” on the U.S. review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, as of mid-October 2023). On November 3, 2023, “Quiz Lady” will launch worldwide and exclusively on the Disney+ streaming service.
Started as a rapper, New Yorker Nora Lum, aka Awkwafina, has had a stunning career over the past decade. Via supporting roles in “Bad Neighbors 2,” “Crazy Rich” and “Ocean’s 8,” she made it into the MCU with a starring role in “Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings.” As the titular “Quiz Lady,” the popular comedienne is the undisputed protagonist in Yu’s film.
At Awkwafina’s side, we can expect “Killing Eve” and “Grey’s Anatomy” star Sandra Oh as well as “Anchorman” veteran Will Ferrell, who recently shone in “Barbie. By the way, he also acts as producer here. Also starring: Jason Schwartzman (“Rushmore”), Holland Taylor from “Two And A Half Man,” Tony Hale (“Veep”) and Angela Trimbur (“Horse Girl”).
“QUIZ LADY”: THIS IS THE STORY
Shy accountant Anne (Akwafina) loves to curl up on her sofa at home and watch the game show “Can’t Stop The Quiz” every night. Ever since she was a child, she hasn’t missed an episode of the show hosted by quizmaster Terry McTeer (Ferrell). With pug Mr. Linguine by her side, she guesses passionately and actually answers every question correctly.
Anne is the exact opposite of her extroverted, shrill sister Jenny (Oh). One day, the two suddenly have to work together. Because gangsters have kidnapped Mr. Linguine in order to finally get their hands on the money owed to them by the two women’s gambling-addicted mother, who has gone into hiding.
Because the two are broke and don’t want to become criminals themselves, Anne must overcome her fears. With shaky knees, she signs up for the quiz show in order to be able to hug her four-legged darling again with the prize money she hopes will come her way …
