Even master director Steven Spielberg can’t make all the films he wants. One project that he has to pass on has now seen the light of day anyway and is coming to Netflix in December

Over many years, Steven Spielberg and his production company Amblin have been developing a biopic about the legendary composer, conductor and pianist Leonard Bernstein. In the end, he did not direct the film. Instead, he devoted himself to his other musical passion project, West Side Story.

Even Martin Scorsese, who was at times associated with the film as director, ultimately opted for something else: The Irishman. So the Bernstein biopic ended up in the hands of Bradley Cooper. It is now titled Maestro and will be released in cinemas in a few weeks and on Netflix shortly afterwards.

Big Oscar hope from Netflix: Bradley Cooper as Leonard Bernstein in the Maestro trailer

After delivering an impressive directorial debut with A Star Is Born five years ago, Cooper, who is actually known as an actor, ventures back into the world of music with Maestro. Cooper is not only responsible for the staging of Maestro. He also appears in front of the camera as Leonard Bernstein.

The second important character in the film is Bernstein’s wife, Felicia Montealegre. She is played by Carey Mulligan, who most recently shone in the revelatory film about the Weinstein scandal, She Said. The cast of Maestro also includes Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke, Sarah Silverman and Josh Hamilton.

Spielberg and Scorsese have not completely turned their backs on the project. In the current version, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September, they are listed as producers in the credits.

When will Maestro be released in cinemas and on Netflix?

The German theatrical release of Maestro will take place on December 6, 2023. The film will then be shown exclusively on the big screen for two weeks. It will be available on Netflix from December 20, 2023. Maestro is already considered a hot favorite for the next Oscar season, including in the Best Actor category.
