When Steven Spielberg calls a film a masterpiece, it’s probably the highest accolade you can receive in Hollywood. After all, we’re talking about the director who has created numerous masterpieces over the course of his career, from E.T. to A.I..
At a screening of Killers of the Flower Moon, Spielberg pulled out the masterpiece title: Martin Scorsese’s new film was shown to members of the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles. Afterwards, there was a discussion between Spielberg and Scorsese in which the work was examined in more detail.

In the 36-minute conversation, which you can watch in full at The Hollywood Reporter, Spielberg doesn’t hold back his admiration for his fellow director. Killers of the Flower Moon has obviously really blown him away. He shares the following words with Scorsese.
It’s an extraordinary experience for me to see your movie. You know I think very highly of all your movies, but [Killers of the Flower Moon] stands out for me in a very haunting way. To me, [the movie] is an epic journey, but it’s not a Hollywood epic. It’s a humanitarian epic.
At the end, Spielberg unpacks the greatest compliment.
You are the master of our medium, and this is your masterpiece, Marty.

It’s very touching to see Spielberg and Scorsese in this dialog. Two greats of cinema who nevertheless take nothing for granted. The entire conversation is full of curiosity and deep insights into the art of filmmaking. Few people can tell stories so impressively in moving images.

Killers of the Flower Moon is based on true events and is set in the 1920s, where several members of the Osage tribe were murdered in cold blood. The motive: oil, land and money. Scorsese tells the story in 206 minutes and focuses on the marriage between the Osage woman Mollie (Lily Gladstone) and the veteran Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio), who is directly involved in the gruesome murders.
