Long before the first Shrek film was released, a completely different version of the green hero was planned. Now the video footage has surfaced and will give some fans nightmares.
Shrek may burp, swear and offend common decency, but at heart he is a loveable teddy bear. A completely different, rather darker version of the green ogre (original voice in the movie: Mike Myers) was planned in the 90s. After many years, a 38-second video for the original version has now surfaced
The original Shrek version turned the hero into a fantasy nightmare
Shrek was already being worked on from 1995. In the meantime, an animation company called Zoom Art Studios was involved, which produced test material for the film. The complete recordings were long considered lost, but can now be found on YouTube. The 38-second version of the video was only recently published for the first time.

Shrek was originally planned as a dark, provocative, low-budget film”, says the description of the video. The differences are immediately recognizable. Even though it is not a fully animated version for the cinema, many fans will shudder at the hero’s scrawny figure and grotesque facial features.
As Screen Rant points out, it is doubtful whether the original design would have resulted in a similarly successful franchise. After all, fantasy fans can now look forward to Shrek 5.
