Many critics were repulsed by the supposedly glorified violence in the film when it was released in 1987 (via Meta Critic ). Since then, however, the film’s almost cartoonishly bloody scenes have been celebrated by many as a subversive strategy by Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers), who uses them to criticize a society determined by violence.
When the remake RoboCop was released in 2014, Verhoeven’s film had long since achieved cult status. However, the remake with Joel Kinnaman in the lead role fell flat with many critics, who criticized the lack of socio-critical elements, among other things.
