Probably the toughest western of all time disappears from Netflix in 17 days

by Mike

For a short time only, hard-boiled western fans can embark on a thrilling and extremely disturbing rescue mission with Kurt Russell on Netflix.

In 2015, a western set new standards in terms of violence. But if you haven’t yet seen this gripping and harrowing trip to the Wild West on Netflix, you’ll have to hurry. Because Bone Tomahawk will disappear from the streaming catalog on 14 December 2023

Only briefly on Netflix: What’s the western Bone Tomahawk about?

In the Netflix western Bone Tomahawk, a tribe of Native American cave dwellers kidnap several settlers in 1890. Among the victims is not only the town’s important doctor, but also the wife of rancher Arthur (Patrick Wilson). Arthur then sets off with the ageing Sheriff Hunt (Kurt Russell) and other helpers in search of the kidnapped victims. The fact that the kidnappers are said to be cannibals, who are even shunned by other tribes, adds to the anxiety. But none of the men could have foreseen what awaits them at the end of their rescue mission.

2 hours and 7 minutes on Netflix, Bone Tomahawk takes its time to drive its story towards its horrific climax. However, this only makes the unusual showdown all the more effective. The fact that the western has been given an FSK 18 rating is more than justified here. The depiction of violence is not for the faint-hearted. Even those who believe they have become quite numb to brutality in film are likely to have a hard time swallowing in the finale.

The violence in Bone Tomahawk makes the western extraordinary

Anyone familiar with S. Craig Zahler’s films (Brawl in Cell Block 99, Dragged Across Concrete) knows that the director looks with his camera where others have long since cut away. His extreme violence in Bone Tomahawk was compared to Quentin Tarantino by the Times and looks into human abysses. The “adventure” holds up a horror mirror to the often glorified western genre.

If you miss Bone Tomahawk on Netflix, you can still find the brutal western in the stream: namely at Paramount+ .
