In a new Zack Snyder profile, it’s been revealed that Christopher Nolan is a huge fan of Watchmen. The director has also explained exactly why
At the forefront of the biggest superhero competition alongside Marvel, Zack Snyder has been responsible for the most iconic DC films of the last 10 years. The director not only gave Superman a gritty, grounded update with Man of Steel. The highlight of his DC work is above all the Snyder cut of Justice League, which was only completed later and subsequently added.
The Hollywood Reporter has now published a major new profile on Snyder, which sets the mood for his upcoming sci-fi blockbuster Rebel Moon Part 1: Child of Fire on Netflix. It also reveals that Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan loves Watchmen.
Nolan would have liked to see Watchmen released after the first Avengers film
In an email to The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan wrote of Snyder’s subversive superhero masterpiece Watchmen:
I’ve always believed that Watchmen was ahead of its time. The idea of a superhero team subverting it in such a brilliant way hadn’t been done in movies before. It would have been fascinating to see it released after Avengers.
Read it yet? Huge sci-fi project from Netflix and Zack Snyder is being sued – and the allegations are really nasty
Watchmen really does seem like the sinister antithesis to the gaudy popcorn spectacle that Joss Whedon made with the first Avengers film. Snyder’s adaptation of the Alan Moore original shows superheroes as broken, beaten-down and morally reprehensible antiheroes.
When is the new Zack Snyder blockbuster coming to Netflix?
With the Rebel Moon two-parter, the director has realized his personal vision of a Star Wars-like adventure in space. The first Rebel Moon film will be available on Netflix on December 22, 2023. Part 2 will follow on April 19, 2024.
