A sci-fi epic with a mega-star cast is streaming on Netflix. The 3-hour blockbuster spans several centuries and continents
Over 10 years ago, Matrix directing duo Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski teamed up with German director Tom Tykwer to make the massive sci-fi blockbuster Cloud Atlas – Everything is Connected. The film, based on the novel Cloud Atlas* by David Mitchell, unfortunately flopped at the box office.
If you want to see this epic work spanning several centuries and continents for yourself, you can currently stream Cloud Atlas with a Netflix subscription
Sci-fi epic in streaming: This is what Cloud Atlas is all about
The almost three-hour blockbuster unfolds several stories across six time levels, with the fates of the characters gradually becoming intertwined. The individual storylines look like this:
1849 in the Pacific Islands, lawyer Adam Ewing (Jim Sturgess) helps an enslaved Native American.
In 1936 in Cambridge and Edinburgh, composer Robert Frobisher (Ben Whishaw) tries to write his masterpiece.
1973 in San Francisco, journalist Luisa Rey (Halle Berry) meets with a nuclear scientist.
2012 in London, a gangster threatens literary editor Timothy Cavendish (Jim Broadbent).
20144 in Neo Seoul, the humanoid clone Sonmi-451 (Doona Bae) strives for freedom.
In 2321 on the Big Island (aka post-apocalyptic Hawaii), Zachry (Tom Hanks) ponders the evolution of a society headed for revolution.
With a budget of between 100 and just under 150 million dollars, Cloud Atlas grossed only 130 million dollars worldwide according to Box Office Mojo and flopped as a result. Nevertheless, you will rarely see such ambitious, emotionally charged sci-fi cinema that breaks all rational boundaries
