On Disney+, science fiction series Doctor Who celebrates its 60th anniversary with 3 specials. This week, fans have to say goodbye to David Tennant again
For 60 years now, the eccentric Time Lord, known simply as the Doctor, has been traveling through space and time with several faces in his blue police cell. This makes Doctor Who the longest-running science fiction series.
The anniversary is currently being celebrated on Disney+ with three special episodes and the return of David Tennant, who previously played the sci-fi role from 2005 to 2010. Unfortunately, fans of the Whoniverse will have to say goodbye to Tennant’s 14th Doctor again this Saturday, but there will be another surprise in December
The longest-running sci-fi series: Doctor Who says goodbye to David Tennant (again)
The era of the 14th incarnation of the Doctor has only just begun and it’s already over. With the upcoming episode “The Giggle”, David Tennant and Donna Noble actress Catherine Tate turn their backs on Doctor Who once again. The duo were reunited for the first time in 15 years for the anniversary specials of the sci-fi series, which has been creatively directed by former showrunner Russell T. Davies since this year.
These are the three special episodes of Doctor Who:
Special 1: The Monster from the Stars – November 25
Special 2: In the blue distance – December 2
Special 3: The Giggle – December 9
The farewell episode also features an exciting guest star. Neil Patrick Harris, as the villain Toymaker, will seek the Doctor’s life, while a mysterious doll drives mankind mad. The well-known Doctor Who villain is making his first appearance in 57 years. Previously, in 1966, he involved the very first Doctor (William Hartnell) in a series of deadly games.
A tragic outcome is already pre-programmed: The special will trigger a new “regeneration” of the Time Lord, who then transforms from David Tennant into Ncuti Gatwa. As the 15th Doctor, the Sex Education star will lead the sci-fi series from now on. His first own adventure can even be seen this year.
The 15 Doctor incarnations from 60 years of Doctor Who at a glance:
1st Doctor: William Hartnell
2nd Doctor: Patrick Troughton
3rd Doctor: Jon Pertwee
4th Doctor: Tom Baker
5th Doctor: Peter Davison
6th Doctor: Colin Baker
7th Doctor: Sylvester McCoy
8th Doctor: Paul McGann
9th Doctor: Christopher Eccleston
10th Doctor: David Tennant
11th Doctor: Matt Smith
12th Doctor: Peter Capaldi
13th Doctor: Jodie Whittaker
14th Doctor: David Tennant
15th Doctor: Ncuti Gatwa
When is the next Doctor Who special coming to Disney+?
The third and final anniversary special of Doctor Who will be on Disney+ next Saturday, December 9, 2023. As in previous weeks, the release time will be at 7.30pm.
However, the third special is not the last Doctor Who episode fans can look forward to this year. On Monday, December 25, 2023, another Christmas special will be released on Disney+, officially beginning the new era of Ncuti Gatwa’s 15th Doctor.
In “The Curch on Ruby Road”, we not only get to know the new Doctor, but also the new main character Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson). They will travel through time and space together on Disney+ next year from season 14.
