“They really messed up”: Blue Bloods has been ignoring a major mistake for 13 years, leaving fans completely confused

The crime drama series Blue Bloods is about to end with season 14, but one thing has been confusing fans for 13 years: the age of patriarch Frank Reagan’s offspring.

For over 13 years, the crime drama Blue Bloods – Crime Scene New York has been thrilling viewers with insights into police work on the streets of New York and the exciting character relationships of the family surrounding police chief Frank Reagan, played by Tom Selleck.

In a long-running series with over 270 episodes, it can happen that small logical errors and inconsistencies in the continuity of the plot creep in. However, Blue Bloods has been confusing fans for years with one particularly noticeable error

Blue Bloods confusion for 13 seasons: Not even Frank Reagan knows how old his children are

Let’s take a look back: right at the beginning of the series, we learn that Frank Reagan’s son Joe was murdered by corrupt police officers while investigating a secret society. Unfortunately, Joe’s age and that of his siblings has repeatedly led to logical errors over the course of the 13 seasons so far.

Although we get to see Joe’s gravestone in some episodes, there are different details about his date of birth. One time the gravestone reads January 4, 1977, then again June 6, 1977, as Looper discovers. Even more confusion is caused by a statement from Frank in season 2, who remembers that Joe was still a baby at the time of the Watergate affair in 1973.

“The [writers] really screwed up,” one viewer on Reddit notes, because the contradictory age information keeps driving fans crazy. In the first 7 seasons, it is made clear several times that Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) is the oldest child in the family. From season 8 onwards, however, the age order of the Reagan offspring was completely changed and Joe was retroactively declared the first-born.

If Joe was indeed the oldest child in the family, the date on his tombstone becomes a problem, as both Danny and his sister Erin (Bridget Moynahan) were born before 1977. However, in the best Blue Bloods tradition, their ages are also ambiguous. For example, Erin is said to be over 40 years old in season 1. In season 6, however, she celebrates her 40th birthday – again?
