Not every sequel is a hit, but the sequel Pirates of the Caribbean – Pirates of the Caribbean 2 is, giving Jack Sparrow the second of five chapters. With a budget of 225 million dollars, the adventure grossed 1 billion and 66 million US dollars worldwide according to Box Office Mojo, making it the most successful installment in the series.

After Pirates of the Caribbean, everything could look so rosy for Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) if it weren’t for their connection to Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). And the pirate himself also has a huge problem: he is rudely reminded by the ghost pirate Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) that he once made a pact with him. And the Flying Dutchman now wants to collect this debt in the form of Jack’s soul. The only way he can get out of this predicament is if he finds the tentacled villain’s heart hidden in a chest.

With a running time of 2 hours and 33 minutes, the second adventure in the series is only surpassed by part 3, Pirates of the Caribbean – At World’s End, which clocks in at 2 hours and 48 minutes. In terms of box office takings, however, part 2 remains the frontrunner, closely followed by part 4 Pirates of the Caribbean. Stranger Tides was also the only film to break the billion-dollar mark, but according to Box Office it grossed 20 million dollars less than Pirates of the Caribbean 2. In the budget overview of the five pirate films, the first sequel even lands in penultimate place.
