After Black Adam flop: Dwayne Johnson stars in drama based on true story
As the Hollywood Reporter reports, Johnson is taking on the lead role in the upcoming drama The Smashing Machine. The sports biopic comes from the popular production company A24, which has produced acclaimed works such as Lady Bird from Barbie director Greta Gerwig, the Oscar-winning drama Moonlight and this year’s Movie of the Year nominee Past Lives.

In the upcoming movie starring The Rock, he plays the role of real-life MMA fighter Mark Kerr, who twice won the title as UFC champion in the heavyweight division. The drama is set to chronicle the rise of the wrestler, who also struggled with severe addiction to painkillers.
The Smashing Machine will be directed by Benny Safdie, who was last seen in front of the camera in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. He is best known with his brother Josh Safdie. As a directing duo, the two have, for example, made the incredibly exciting thriller The Black Diamond with Adam Sandler.
