The sci-fi epic The Creator tells the story of the war between humans and robots. The visually stunning original story is not just something for the eyes, but also for the heart. The film by director Gareth Edwards will soon be released for home cinema

Seven years after director Gareth Edwards staged a war epic with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the next gigantic sci-fi war film followed. The Creator boasts magnificent images and a story that tugs at the heartstrings. At the time of its release, the film was mentioned in the same breath as screen greats such as Apocalypse Now and Blade Runner, but commercial success at the box office failed to materialize.

Instead, The Creator will soon be able to play its recordings in home cinemas. Among other things, the limited edition steelbook will be released on January 19 and can already be pre-ordered

The limited 4K version and the Blu-ray edition contain the making-of as bonus material. This is not included on DVD*. Amazon Prime Video * offers the robot film in the purchase and rental version.

The Creator: Creating great pictures on a low budget

Edwards not only directed, but also wrote the screenplay, creating an original story that is truly refreshing in an age of sequels, remakes and prequels. He was inspired by Steven Spielberg’s E.T. for the emotional story of the film, as he announced at a press conference. The Alien classic made him cry and it was precisely this emotional reaction that he wanted to trigger with his film.

At first, it was not so easy to sell the studio on his idea, as elaborate sci-fi epics quickly cost around 200 to 300 million US dollars. Edwards proved himself to be a real thrifty man by returning to his indie roots. He worked with a small team so that he could be flexible and film in the real world instead of in front of a green screen. They shot the impressive landscape shots in eight different countries. The sci-fi elements were only added to the original images in post-production, as Edwards explains in detail here.

Edwards made the most of the 80 million dollar budget, as the strong shots are impressive. Unfortunately, the film was not profitable and only made 98 million dollars (via The Numbers ). Nevertheless, the director’s great skills are evident here and, according to insiders, he could now also be in talks to take on Thor 5. This would make the Marvel series a lot darker.
