In the animated Marvel series What If…?, alternative MCU stories are played out. But one particularly dark idea for season 2 will probably end up in the poison cupboard forever.
In addition to the live-action films and series from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the animated series What If…? on Disney+ has been presenting alternative stories from the superhero universe for two seasons. Now a recent interview with the showrunner has surfaced in which he talks about a rejected Spider-Man idea for What If…? It sounds promising, but will probably be banned forever
Unrealized What If story sounds like the darkest Spider-Man material
With IGN, What If…? showrunner and screenwriter A.C. Bradley went through the various episodes of season 2. He also talked about an episode that was not realized. It sounds like a dark Spider-Man story that would have been too hard for everyone:
It felt like the world had already ended and we didn’t need to add anything more. And so it became a kind of escape and a fun release. However, I did write an episode that will forever disappear into the drawer and it was very, very dark. I called it ‘Children of Men with Spider-Man’.
Children of Men is probably the best sci-fi movie of the last 20 years. The story takes place in a hopeless future where no more children are born. The protagonist is tasked with bringing the last pregnant woman on the planet to safety
