Amazon Prime recently launched an action war film that became a surprise box office hit in the cinema. It is controversial.
Sometimes you don’t need complex characters or a creative story to make an action hit. For many, this is proven by the success of the war film Act of Valor (2012), which was only praised by most critics thanks to its breathless battle scenes (via Metacritic ). The controversial spectacle has recently become available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
On Amazon Prime: Action war film caused controversy on release
Act of Valor revolves around a team of US Navy SEALs who are tasked with protecting their homeland from a particularly perfidious threat: Together with a drug dealer, a terrorist wants to smuggle suicide bombers into the USA.

Most of the members of the elite team are real Navy SEALs, which may have contributed to the authentic staging of the combat scenes. The Hollywood Reporter describes the land, air and water missions as “masterfully coordinated”. Aside from the action sequences, however, there are only a few aspects of the film by Scott Waugh (Expendables 4) and Mouse McCoy that have won widespread praise from critics. The acting performances of the amateurs were criticized and the portrayal of the military apparatus caused controversy.
Several critics have likened the film to military propaganda, which according to Rolling Stone comes across as a “recruitment poster” and according to the AV Club as “manipulative”. To what extent this judgment corresponds to the facts, each viewer must decide for themselves.
