A new monster for Netflix: Master director swaps Andrew Garfield for Saltburn star for Frankenstein remake

Horror master Guillermo de Toro is bringing a remake of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to Netflix and has found a monster successor following the departure of Andrew Garfield.

Fantasy and horror icon Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) is currently preparing the film Frankenstein for Netflix. But just as the monster from Mary Shelley’s horror novel has to be assembled from corpse parts, a movie also has to find its individual parts first. Now Andrew Garfield, originally cast as Frankenstein’s creature, has been replaced.

Monstrastic change for Netflix: Guillermo del Toro swaps Andrew Garfield for Jacob Elordi

As Deadline reports, the strike in Hollywood has disrupted some plans. Due to the postponement of filming, Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man) can no longer take on his leading role due to scheduling difficulties. Accordingly, a new actor had to be found. Rising star Jacob Elordi, who once made it big at Netflix with the Kissing Booth trilogy and is now returning to the streamer, stepped into the breach as the new monster. He can currently be seen at the movies in Priscilla and on Amazon in Saltburn. And he’s not the only newly announced actor

In addition to Jacob Elordi, who joins Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth in Andrew Garfield’s place, further stars have been found for Netflix’s Frankenstein. Among them is a German who excelled in Netflix’s war film Im Westen nichts Neues last year. The cast of Guillermo del Toro’s horror film currently looks like this:

Oscar Isaac (Star Wars 7) as Dr. Victor Frankenstein
Jacob Elordi (Euphoria) as Frankenstein’s monster
Mia Goth (Pearl) possibly as Dr. Frankenstein’s love interest
David Bradley (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone)
Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds)
Lars Mikkelsen (Star Wars: Ahsoka)
Christian Convery (Netflix’s Sweet Tooth)
Felix Kammerer (Nothing New in the West)

Guillermo del Toro is not planning a flawless Frankenstein remake for Netflix

Not much is yet known about Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein adaptation. However, IMDb states that the Mexican director is not aiming for a 1:1 adaptation of the famous horror novel. Instead, his Frankenstein film is set many years after the creation of the creature. Here, another scientist, Dr. Pretorious, follows in the footsteps of the dead doctor in 19th century Eastern Europe in order to learn more about Frankenstein’s experiments to create his artificial human.

Guillermo del Toro recently created his darkly animated version of Pinocchio and the anthology horror series Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities for Netflix. His Frankenstein will probably not come to Netflix until 2025 at the earliest
