On Amazon Prime for The Snow Society fans: This is what Thirteen Lives is all about
With Thirteen Lives, master director Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind) has filmed the true story of the Tham Luang disaster: In the summer of 2018, a young soccer team and coach were exploring Thailand’s extensive Tham Luang cave system when flood-like rainfall blocked their escape from the cave. An international team of helpers, including cave divers Richard Stanton (Viggo Mortensen in the film) and John Volanthen (Colin Farrell), dared to rescue the 12 boys and their teacher before the prisoners died from lack of oxygen or thirst.

Howard concentrates on building tension and avoids unnecessarily stylized moments. Although he has cast two Hollywood stars in Mortensen and Farrell, he also gives plenty of space to many other actors in the rescue drama.
The result was well received by critics: “Irresistibly entertaining and breathlessly exciting” is how The Guardia n described the film. As far as documentary-style dramas based on real-life examples go, there is hardly anything better, according to the Observer.
The Tham Luang rescue operation has already been revisited several times in various formats since 2018. In addition to Thirteen Lives, there is also the feature film The Cave, the documentary series Thai Cave Rescue and the documentary The Rescue.
