There are adventurous series that don’t come along every day. Unfortunately, one of these exceptional series was canceled despite its Pirates of the Caribbean vibes.
In 2022, an unusual pirate series first made a name for itself: Our Flag Means Death told a true adventure story with wacky humor. It was only last year that the half-hour episodes finally came to Germany (on RTL+). As Variety reported, Our Flag Means Death is now unexpectedly over at the Max channel (formerly HBO Max). This is despite the fact that series creator David Jenkins recently revealed details of his Season 3 plans, which would have concluded the adventure with a third act.
The acclaimed pirate adventure Our Flag Means Death tells the story of wealthy landowner Stede Bonnet, who has a midlife crisis in 1717 and decides to become a privateer in the best Pirates of the Caribbean mix of suspense and humor. With a motley crew of more or less talented pirates, Bonnet (Rhys Darby) sails the seas and finally meets the legendary Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), who takes him hostage. An unexpected friendship then develops between the two very different men. The broadcaster Max only said that it was canceled:

After worldwide praise for the Pirates series, its ending before season 3 comes as a surprise
The fact that Taika Waitit (What We Do in the Shadows) supports Our Flag Means Death as an actor and producer is also reflected in the quirky humor of the adventure series. Here, pirates sew their own flags with dedication and learn to talk about their feelings on deck after plundering and murder. The queer crew does the rest to give the narrative its unusual flavor.

This was well received not only by the audience, but also by international critics. The Wall Street Journal called Our Flag Means Death “mischievously mischievous” and Decider described the series as a “unique workplace comedy” with a convincing ensemble. Collider in turn praised the mix of “comedy and honesty” it brought to the series.
