Amazon Prime has added a science fiction film to its program that unfolds a captivating vision of the future of a different kind with its two exceptional stars

A week ago, the film Enemy (in English: Foe) came to Amazon Prime and since then has been unfolding its effect as a haunting science fiction film with two exceptional acting talents between doomsday mood and glimmer of hope.

In Amazon’s Enemy, being human becomes a sci-fi ordeal

The sci-fi film Enemy is set in the year 2065, a future in which Midwestern America has largely withered away. But Junior’s family (Gladiator 2 star Paul Mescal) has been farming their piece of land here for many generations, and so he and his wife Hen (Saoirse Ronan) hold on to this tradition.

At least until the stranger Terrance (Aaron Pierre) knocks on their door and makes them an offer: His company is looking for farmers to give farming in space a boost and they have their eye on Junior. During his absence, Hen would be provided with a cloned copy of her husband. At first this idea seems absurd to the couple, but perhaps it would be the only solution to save their home?

There are sci-fi films that captivate with bombastic images full of space battles and there are others that prefer to unfold their well thought-out concepts in a quiet setting. Amazon’s Enemy by Garth Davis (Lion) definitely belongs to the second type, despite a few flying objects and glimpses of space stations. But that doesn’t mean that the thriller is a disappointment for science fiction fans. The calmness with which it unfolds its story only makes the finale all the more powerful.

This is mainly thanks to its convincing stars: Saoirse Ronan, who has long since proven her extraordinary acting talent in films such as Little Women and Who’s Hanna?, and shooting star Paul Mescal, who is on his way to Hollywood Olympus after Normal People and Aftersun with Gladiator 2, play the couple at the center of the story vividly. At times cool and at others tender, they meet and unfold a whole universe of human emotions between them. And what more could you want from a sci-fi movie than that?
