An oppressive sci-fi dystopia between horror and hope: The Tributes of Panem reached an audience of millions and became a global success. 9 years after the last film, it continues in cinemas and home cinemas

The Tribute of Panem – The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is not a classic sequel, but takes us back in time and tells the story of Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), who you know as President Snow from the main series.

While the Hunger Games prequel is still showing in cinemas, you can already get the home cinema edition from Amazon. The limited 4K Steelbook, which will be released on April 5, should be particularly popular

The best movie in the series? That’s how well The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes was received

The first reactions shortly after the film’s release were extremely positive and promised breathtaking action. There was even talk of the “best Hunger Games film”. But what is so good about the new entry in the franchise?

Fans agree: the original novel has been superbly adapted and the film gives the villain from the main series additional depth. The young Coriolanus Snow’s complexity makes him an ideal main character to root for, even though his actions become increasingly sinister.

The rest of the cast is also great and has been praised in the reviews. Rachel Zegler proves herself as rebellious singer Lucy Gray Baird, who is mentored by Snow in the brutal battle royale games. In addition, big names such as Peter Dinklage, Jason Schwartzman and Viola Davis deliver strong performances.

On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a strong 89 percent positive audience rating, while the trade press has reacted somewhat more cautiously – 64 percent of reviews are positive. Moviepilot gives it a solid 6.6 out of 10 points. Whether The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is the best film in the series and thus surpasses Catching Fire, Moviepilot’s best film in the series to date, is up to each fan to decide for themselves.
