The 80s film Stand By Me tells an absolutely timeless story despite its 50s setting and is therefore still extremely popular today. The successful Stephen King adaptation is now available in a Steelbook in 4K

The studios weren’t exactly scrambling to make a movie of Stephen King’s short story The Body. And when one did, it had a low 8 million US dollar budget and little hope of being a hit. However, Rob Reiner directed Stand By Me – The Secret of a Summer with such sensitivity that the film became a sure-fire success and grossed over 52 million.

The 1986 film adaptation has since become a coming-of-age classic, starring Hollywood greats such as Kiefer Sutherland and John Cusack. Stand By Me will be released in Steelbook in 4K and Blu-ray on March 14

Stand By Me is also already available on Blu-ray or can be streamed on Amazon Prime. The bonus material includes the following: Picture-in-Picture Commentary, Documentary, Audio Commentary, Music Video, Deleted Scenes and Alternate Scenes.

This is what Stand By Me is about

Four friends Gordie (Wil Wheaton), Chris (River Phoenix), Teddy (Corey Feldman) and Vern (Jerry O’Connell) learn that the body of a boy their age, who has been missing for some time, is supposedly lying by the railroad tracks. They set off on a two-day hike, driven by the curiosity of seeing a dead body and the idea of being celebrated as local heroes. At the same time, Vern’s older brother and his thug buddies are also searching for the body.

Stand By Me captures the nostalgia of one last great summer with friends before the serious side of life begins. The four friends have long since grown up and carry with them big issues such as trauma, grief and fears for the future, which they hide behind bad jokes. The friends look behind each other’s façades without saying much and give each other support. This is probably what makes the film so appealing, as it tells so sensitively about friendship, adventure and growing up.
