by Tommy

The Star Wars rumors have come thick and fast in the last few days. We bring order to the chaos and take a look at which films are really coming and what is just speculation so far

A new Star Wars film was announced at the beginning of the year and since then the galaxy far, far away has been in chaos. Almost every day there are new updates and rumors. To bring some order to the jumble of information, we have put together a small overview with the most important questions and answers about the upcoming Star Wars projects, from Rey’s return to the Mando movie.

How many Star Wars films have been officially announced?

Currently, four Star Wars films have been officially announced by Lucasfilm. Three were unveiled last year at Star Wars Celebration. A fourth has been confirmed since the beginning of the year.

A Star Wars film by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy: Set after the sequel trilogy, it tells the story of the rebuilding of the Jedi Order. Daisy Ridley returns as Rey Skywalker. The project is being described as “New Jedi Order”. However, this is not yet the official title

A Star Wars film by James Mangold: After Indy 5, James Mangold tells the story of the origin of the Jedi and the Force. The film is set 25,000 years before Star Wars and is usually referred to as “Dawn of the Jedi” in media coverage. But even this title is not official

A Star Wars film by Dave Filoni: The third film announced at the Star Wars Celebration comes from Clone Wars mastermind Dave Filoni. It will bring together all the series from the Mandoverse on the big screen. However, no further information about the project is known

A Star Wars film by Jon Favreau: The Mandalorian & Grogu is still very fresh on this list. We’ve known since the beginning of the year that The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau is bringing the story of the titular characters to the movies. And this is where the confusion begins

Is Jon Favreau’s Mando movie replacing The Mandalorian season 4?

Many Star Wars fans have assumed that filming for season 4 of The Mandalorian will begin this year. The announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu is therefore causing uncertainty: Will the film replace the new episodes? Will both come? And how does the Filoni film fit in?

The Hollywood Reporter brings some clarity in its Heat Vision newsletter.

Before the actors and screenwriters strike in Hollywood, The Mandalorian season 4 was firmly planned. Favreau had also said several times that the scripts were already written

Following the strike, Lucasfilm has shifted its priorities and put many planned projects on the back burner. The most important thing for the studio under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy is currently to bring a new Star Wars film to the cinema.

The Mandalorian & Grogu is definitely coming. The wording in the press release indicates that it will be the first new Star Wars film. Favreau is directing and co-writing the script with Filoni.

Filoni’s Mandoverse film is still being planned, but is still a long way off. For now, Filoni is busy working on Ahsoka Season 2, which will most likely lead up to the major motion picture.

The Mandalorian season 4 is not off the table, but it’s not certain either. If the movie is a big hit, it could lead into the next phase of the Mandoverse at Disney+, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

What’s the status of the Rey movie with Daisy Ridley?

This week, a rumor caused an uproar that the Rey movie has been postponed indefinitely due to creative differences with screenwriter Steven Knight. However, film journalist Germain Lussier of io9 has learned from his sources at Lucasfilm that this is not the case. The project is still in the works.

All the facts about the Rey movie at a glance:

The story takes place 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker
Daisy Ridley returns as Rey Skywalker.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy takes over as director
Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were the first screenwriters
Steven Knight is the current screenwriter and is expected to submit his new draft of the script to Lucasfilm soon

The usually reliable scooper Jeff Sneider backs up Lussier’s report and adds two exciting details in his newsletter The InSneider. Apparently, Ridley will receive a fee of 12.5 million US dollars for her Star Wars return and could appear as Rey Skywalker in a Star Wars film by Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy alongside the New Jedi Order film. However, the project is not yet concrete

When will the new Star Wars films be released in cinemas?

Lucasfilm has so far announced three release dates for the coming years, but without linking them to a specific title.

May 20, 2026
December 18, 2026
December 17, 2027

Sneider speculates that The Mandalorian & Grogu will arrive in May 2026, the Rey movie will take over the December 2026 slot and the Dawn of the Jedi movie will then arrive in 2027. For Filoni’s Mandoverse film, he believes a 2028 release is likely.

What Star Wars series can we expect from Disney+?

The focus on new movies does not mean that the series on Disney+ are history. Seven new series or seasons have been confirmed for the next two years.

The Bad Batch, Season 3 (2024)
Tales of the Jedi, season 2 (2024)
The Acolyte, season 1 (2024)
Skeleton Crew, Season 1 (2024)
Andor, Season 2 (2025)
Ahsoka, Season 2 (2025)
Visions, Season 3 (2025)

What happened to all the other Star Wars films?

Over the years, many Star Wars movies have made the rounds that were never released. Some have been officially announced, some have come to light through insider reports. We give an assessment of how likely the realization of the individual projects is

Star Wars films that currently look possible

Shawn Levy’s Star Wars film was never officially announced. However, the director himself confirmed that he is working on a corresponding project. Sneider’s report was the first time the movie made the rounds in a long time.
Donald Glover’s Lando film was originally announced as a series for Disney+ at Disney Investor Day 2020. Since 2023, we know that Donald and Stephen Glover are turning the project into a movie

Star Wars films that are becoming increasingly unlikely:

Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie was officially announced in May 2020 with Krysty Wilson-Cairns as co-writer. Since then, the movie has made no significant progress. There is not even a complete script yet

Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy was announced before The Last Jedi was released in 2017, but has yet to materialize. Johnson and Lucasfilm regularly express their interest, but there is no further movement

Star Wars films that will (probably) never come:

Kevin Feige’s Star Wars movie has been rumored since 2019. Michael Waldron was linked to the project as screenwriter and Joe and Anthony Russo as directors. The film was never actually made

Guillermo del Toro’s Star Wars film would have told the story of the most powerful gangster in the Star Wars universe, Jabba the Hutt. Del Toro compares the story set in Tatooine with mafia epics à la The Godfather.

D.B. Weiss and David Benioff’s Star Wars trilogy was supposed to tell the story of the first Jedi after Game of Thrones. After creative differences, they left the project. Now the Dawn of the Jedi film awaits us.

J.D. Dillard and Matt Owens’ Star Wars film first appeared in the media in early 2020 and was to be set on the Sith planet Exegol. Dillard cited the video game Star Wars: TIE Fighter as inspiration

Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars film caused quite a stir at Disney Investor Day 2020. Rogue Squadron was announced with an X-Wing teaser and a theatrical release in December 2023. The film is currently on hold

A Droid Story is another loser from Disney Investor Day 2023. Just like the Mandoverse series Rangers of the New Republic, Lucasfilm has secretly, quietly dropped the project under the table.

If we go a little further back in time, we find plans for feature films about Obi-Wan Kenobi (by Stephen Daldry) and Boba Fett (by Josh Trank and later James Mangold). These projects were turned into Star Wars series on Disney+. In addition, screenwriter Jon Kasdan shared his ideas for a sequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018, which we will probably never see
