After a sci-fi film starring Hugh Jackman was a huge financial success 13 years ago, there will finally be a sequel in series form.
Numerous films are based on the science fiction stories by Richard Matheson. These include I Am Legend and The Box. Matheson’s short story Steel was also adapted into a film, which was released in 2011 with the title Real Steel, starring Hugh Jackman. Today, the epic robot battle is shown on Prime. A sequel to Real Steel in series form is also planned
Sci-fi adaptation on TV: This is what the Hugh Jackman blockbuster Real Steel is about
Charlie Kenton (Jackman) had an unprecedented career as a boxing champion that took him to the top. But his fame was short-lived as robots replaced the human fighters and entered the ring with their muscles of steel. Charlie’s second chance is to come when his son wants to rebuild a discarded sparring robot called ‘Atom’. At first Charlie thinks it’s a waste of time, but soon realizes that Atom can take a beating and dish it out at the right time.
Real Steel: A movie sequel failed, but there’s a series
After the huge financial success of Real Steel, a sequel was an obvious choice. With production costs of 110 million US dollars, the blockbuster grossed almost 300 million worldwide and received an Oscar nomination for the visual effects. Both Jackman and director Shawn Levy, who are private friends, campaigned for a sequel. In the end, however, this failed due to their love for the project.
At the 2014 Toronto Film Festival, Levy revealed that he and Jackman had been looking for the right script for three and a half years, but would only make the film if the plot and character development offered something new. So far, however, they have only ever found one of these in the books (via Collider ). The success of the first film should not be diminished by an inferior sequel. And now, after 13 years, it seems that there will be no more.
Instead, fans can look forward to a series that will appear on Disney+. Shawn Levy will be on board as producer. It is unclear whether Hugh Jackman will play a role, as no new information has emerged since Levy spoke about the project in another interview with Collider in December 2022. There, Levy said:
It’s in very active and promising development. I’m really excited about the ideas we’re exploring. But as you can see from my guarded words, I can’t say anything about the author or the timing yet.
So it remains to be seen if Levy will find material that lives up to his standards this time. At least the development sounds further along than a few years ago. However, Levy has already kept one promise. Three years ago, the director told Comic Book that he definitely wanted to bring his good friends Jackman and Ryan Reynolds together on the big screen. We can see what that looks like in July 2024, when Deadpool 3 is released.
