Duncan Jones has become famous as a sci-fi hopeful. However, he recently suffered two bitter defeats, one of them at Netflix. Now he’s back with a new project

Thanks to Moon and Source Code, Duncan Jones was considered an exciting up-and-coming director in Hollywood. However, his blockbuster debut, the fantasy film Warcraft: The Beginning, turned out to be a huge disappointment. Even worse, however, was the sci-fi debacle Mute on Netflix, which was supposed to mark his comeback.

At the time, Jones was one of the first directors to realize one of their ideas at Netflix that would never have been greenlit by traditional studios. However, Jones was unable to use his golden Netflix ticket profitably. Mute fell miles short of expectations and has since faded into obscurity.

Rogue Trooper: Duncan Jones returns with new sci-fi film after Netflix defeat

After the Mute bankruptcy, things went very quiet for Jones. Six years later, he is back with a new project, as Variety reports. Rogue Trooper is a film adaptation of the comic strip of the same name by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons, which made its debut in a 1981 issue of 2000 AD.

The story of Rogue Trooper is set far in the future and takes place on the planet Nu-Earth. Two factions, the Norts and the Southers, are fighting each other relentlessly. In the midst of this conflict, the titular super soldier finds himself the result of questionable genetic experiments.

When his squad is ambushed, he is the only survivor to make it out. He then sets off in search of the traitor in order to take revenge. He is accompanied by three of his dead comrades, whose personalities are reflected in objects: his weapon, his helmet and his rucksack.

Duncan Jones’ Rogue Trooper adaptation will be an animated film and the cast has already been confirmed

Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk) takes on the role of the genetically modified soldier. He will be joined by Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter) and Jack Lowden (Slow Horses). The cast also includes Sean Bean (Game of Thrones), Jemaine Clement (Legion) and Asa Butterfield (Sex Education).

Jones has been linked to the adaptation of the material since 2018. According to the Variety report, filming has already been completed. Rogue Trooper will be released as an animated film using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 graphics engine, which is also used in video games such as Fortnite.
