Even before the start of Dune 2, Denis Villeneuve is already dropping dark hints about a change that could pave the way for part 3. His stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya are on fire
The theatrical release of Dune: Part Two is just a month away. Then we will finally find out what happens to Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) on the desert planet. Director Denis Villeneuve is already hinting at the end of Part 2 and his possible plans for Dune 3. His stars would definitely be on board
Denis Villeneuve reveals: He is changing the novel for Dune 2 and has big plans for Dune 3
2021 Denis Villeneuve filmed Dune, the first half of the famous novel by Frank Herbert. Dune 2 is supposed to bring the adaptation of the book to a close. But apparently the sci-fi director has made a change to the original, as he hinted to Gamesradar regarding a “heartbreaking ending”:
All the elements are there. But I think the movie adaptation is more tragic than the book. The way Part 2 [of Dune] ends … that would create a total balance and equilibrium – to then end Paul’s story with what we might say in Part 3.
In the first Dune movie, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) arrives with his family on the planet Arrakis, which is coveted for its most valuable substance, Spice. However, the reign of his father, Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac), ends with a coup by the evil Harkonnen, in which Leto dies and Paul flees with his mother Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) to the desert dwellers of the Fremen. In Dune 2, he and Chani (Zendaya) and her people fight against the oppressors and the Emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken).
Anyone familiar with the original Dune will know that the novel does not end on a happy note. To what extent Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptation of Dune 2 will vary the new status quo of the book’s ending or go completely different ways, we will find out when the film is released on February 29, 2024
Despite the enthusiasm of Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya: Dune 3 is not yet certain
Whether Dune 2 will be followed by the sci-fi film Dune 3, which would be based on the book Dune Messiah (in German: Der Herr des Wüstenplanten*), depends on the success of this year’s sequel. Even in the event of a hit movie, it would also be unclear how quickly Dune: Part Three would actually be made, as Denis Villeneuve recently hinted that he would probably have another project lined up in the meantime.
At least the Dune stars are keen to bring Paul’s story to an end in Dune 3 with Denis Villeneuve: Zendaya affirmed she was “passionately ready to hear his vision”. And Timothée Chalamet said: “If the opportunity presents itself to finish the story with [Dune] Messiah, we’re all super-enthusiastic. “
