The latest superhero film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe went completely under at the cinema. Now the costly blockbuster is getting a second chance on Disney+.
Around three months after its cinema release, The Marvels hits Disney+. The latest film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe unites three well-known superheroes in front of the camera for the first time. In addition to Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson, the cast includes Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Kamala Kahn.
The Marvels thus culminates the stories of three MCU projects from recent years, most notably the blockbuster high-flyer Captain Marvel, which grossed over a billion US dollars at the box office in 2019. Unfortunately, the sequel was not granted this success. Now you can catch up on the movie on Disney+
The Marvels at Disney+: Three superheroines are catapulted across the MCU
Before you watch The Marvels on Disney+, you should take a look at two MCU series that are also available on the streaming service: WandaVision and Ms. Marvel. In WandaVision, we meet the adult version of Monica Rambau, who appeared as a child in the first Captain Marvel film. Now she belongs to Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) secret organization S.A.B.E.R.
Here you can watch the trailer for The Marvels:
Ms. Meanwhile, Marvel introduces us to young Kamala Kahn, who grows up in New Jersey as a normal teenager until a mysterious bracelet gives her supernatural powers. Now, as a budding superhero, Kamala can finally emulate her great role model: Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel. Soon she is closer to her inspiration than she could ever have dreamed.

Through a wormhole, Kamala, Monica and Carol are hurled across the universe and swap places. Just a moment ago, Carol was fighting dark adversaries in space when she suddenly finds herself in Kamala’s nursery and vice versa. Building on this premise, The Marvels turns into an extremely entertaining sci-fi adventure that catapults us right across the MCU.
Incredibly expensive MCU blockbuster: The Marvels couldn’t even recoup its budget
As the business magazine Forbes reports, the production of The Marvels devoured a huge budget of 275 million US dollars. Filming took place in the UK. Thanks to benefits from the British government, the film ended up with a budget of 220 million US dollars. According to Forbes, a box office result of at least 440 million US dollars would have been necessary for success.
However, as the figures from Box Office Mojo show, the film only made 195 million US dollars. This means that The Marvels even undercut the box office takings of The Incredible Hulk, which came in at 265 million US dollars in 2008 and was the MCU’s box office laggard to date. The film is now starting its streaming life on Disney+ before the next MCU spin-off, Deadpool 3, is released in cinemas
