Netflix is clearing out its movie line-up and saying goodbye to one of the biggest sci-fi surprises of recent years. The timing could hardly be worse
It happens time and again that Netflix has to say goodbye to films in its range. The reason: if it’s not a Netflix original, most of the titles are licensed by another studio and therefore only available for a limited time. Now it has hit the 2021 sci-fi surprise Ghostbusters: Legacy.
The timing is really annoying: you can only stream the ghost adventure on Netflix until February 26, 2024. After that, the film will disappear, although the sequel will be released in cinemas a few weeks later. In March, the ghost hunters will once again conquer the big screen and have to deal with scary characters
Disappearing soon on Netflix: Without Ghostbusters: Legacy, the sci-fi series would not have survived in cinemas
Ghostbusters: Legacy is an important film for the development of the cult series, which began in 1984 under the direction of Ivan Reitman. In the sci-fi comedy Ghostbusters, he brought together Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Rick Moranis to protect New York from a sinister force.
The success of the first part was followed five years later by the sequel Ghostbusters 2. Since then, we have experienced a back and forth with the ghost series in the cinema. A third part was planned for a long time, but in the end the project never materialized before our eyes, unlike the ghosts of the reboot.
Paul Feig gave Ghostbusters a completely new look in 2016 and cast Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. However, the film turned out to be a financial disappointment, so the next reinvention was released in 2021, this time with more references to the original cast of the series.
In Ghostbusters: Legacy, we meet the daughter of Dr. Egon Spengler, who was played by Harold Raimis in the first two parts. Callie Spengler (Carrie Coon), however, has nothing to do with her father’s passion for ghosts. She is struggling with completely different problems, which primarily include money worries.
For this reason, she has to vacate her apartment in Chicago. With her children, Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), she moves into an old estate in Summerville, Oklahoma. The huge house is not only in need of renovation, but also has a few secrets and, of course, ghosts
After Feig’s Ghostbusters vision divided parts of the fandom despite good reviews, Ghostbusters: Legacy, directed by Jason Reitman, Ivan Reitman’s son, proved to be a conciliatory film. On a smaller budget of 75 million US dollars, it managed to take over 200 million worldwide at the box office, as Box Office Mojo recorded.
The Ghostbusters rescue was a success. Three years later, the next part follows with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire – and it leans even more into nostalgia. After the trip to the country, we are back in New York and the three cast members from the original (Murray, Aykroyd and Hudson) who are still alive return
